Our Story
From the shores of Maui to the streets of Portland, this is how aloha found a new home.
The Beginning
Kawika's Story
Chef Kawika grew up on the island of Maui, where food was always more than a meal — it was a way to bring people together. Raised on traditional Hawaiian recipes passed down through generations, Kawika learned the art of slow-roasted kalua pork, fresh poke, and the perfect plate lunch before he could drive.
After moving to Portland, Kawika saw an opportunity to share the flavors and spirit of the islands with the Pacific Northwest. In 2019, Bamboo Grove PDX opened its doors in the South Waterfront neighborhood, bringing authentic Hawaiian comfort food to a city that embraced it with open arms.
Today, every dish at Bamboo Grove is a tribute to the traditions, ingredients, and aloha spirit that Kawika grew up with. From the two-scoop rice to the homemade mac salad, every plate is crafted with the same love and care as a family meal back home.
The Aloha Spirit
Aloha is more than a greeting — it's a way of life. It means love, compassion, and a deep respect for the people and world around you. At Bamboo Grove, we carry that spirit into everything we do.
From the warm welcome when you walk in to the generous portions on your plate, we want every guest to feel like ohana — family. That's what Hawaiian hospitality is all about.

Giving Back
Maui Kokua
When the devastating wildfires struck Maui in 2023, it hit close to home. Kawika's family, friends, and community were directly impacted. Bamboo Grove immediately organized fundraisers, donated meals, and rallied the Portland community to help.
We continue to support Maui wildfire relief efforts and give back to the Hawaiian community that gave us everything. Kokua means to help — and that's what we do.
